The Glory of the Lord

With the Resurrection – way was made for us to have an encounter with God through the Holy Spirit.

The ENCOUNTER is what changed everything… Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.

I. When the church began…Acts. The church was manifesting the Kingdom of God in the earth.

Question: We’ve got the Holy Spirit. Why do we need to get together for a service?

A. Discipleship? Evangelism? A place for us to be healed? Find our calling?

1. What would church look like if we prepared as if it were about whatever God likes, whatever the Holy Spirit enjoys moving and being in.

2. All these things are good things – but not what the corporate meeting together of the body was ever meant for. These things happen as a result of our focus on the Lord ---- not on us.

3. Much of church is focus on what we can get because there is a constant struggle between wanting to feel worth (our glory) – and giving God worth (worship) His glory…


C. It was a shadow of the temple in Heaven. What is the temple in Heaven for?  Going to start midway through vs. 8 (I think it’s going to scare us to death when we see the Throne if we haven’t begun to see into the spirit realm here. Certainly going to feel very “non” logical).

Revelations 4:8… Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." 9Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."

D. The Throne in Heaven was duplicated on the earth through the temple (a shadow of what was in heaven) The point of the gathering around the throne is to see God, not to minister to the creatures. 

Ex. 35:40 See that you make them according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.

1.    Ark of the covenant was there: a wooden Chest overlaid with gold – in it was the 10 commandments; Aaron’s rod that budded and a jar of manna.
2.    Wooden chest – our hearts; overlaid with gold – the Holy Spirit’s work and anointing, etc.

Exodus 25:8,9 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them according to all that I show you, after the pattern of the tabernacle …22 There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.

2. This was called the 'mercy seat' – where the High Priest met with God once a year on the Day of Atonement to ask for forgiveness for the sins of the people so the people could meet with God. THAT was the point.


E.  The temple is now inside of us. The tabernacle is with mankind. It’s within us.

Luke 17:20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."

    F. It was the place where the GLORY OF GOD came.

II. Constant struggle between THE GLORY OF GOD and the Glory of MANKIND

(This struggle does more to hold back God’s manifest presence in the earth than any demon in hell).

A.    Would we do anything different whether we received praise for it or not?
1.    A lot of ministry centers around getting approval (love) from people, or on what we do (works-whether in church “ministry” or through our jobs, etc.) to give us a sense of worth; Glory means – worth; the weight of something
2.    We need one another’s love and that is EVANGELISM. The world will know him by our love for one another –not for them but for one another. But the focus on hunger for love (acceptance, approval, etc.) from people often CONFLICTS with the glory of God being manifest through us in the Earth.


        1. We know the glory of God covered the Ark of the Covenant

2. But in heaven, before we were created, Lucifer – covered throne. He was the glory of God. He displayed God’s worth.

Ezekiel 28:14 14 “ You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

C.    There’s so much misunderstanding about the ministry we’re called to which is why so many are tempted to compare their relationship with the Lord to how much they’re doing or what position they hold in a church.

1. This is why churches feel the need to be validated by how many people come (not scriptural)
2. I’ve heard it said that you aren't a leader unless people follow you. I think about Jesus ---and there were times no one followed. Other times, 3 followed – or 12… and one of them followed for the wrong reason.

3. LEADING is something that can’t be validated with numbers or by the human eye. See the influence and authority someone is walking in by the Spirit – sometimes it will NEVER be seen by human eyes until we’re in heaven. (Last will be first, first will be last)

4. More people are leading than what they realize. And they invalidate their influence to themselves because they don’t see the position of leadership that they have. (danger of comparing)

D. The presence of God is inside of us if we’ve been born again.

1. God meets with us in our hearts.

2. WE are the place where people are to meet Jesus --- not a building in which we hold our services. That’s not what meetings were meant for…

E. We’re the temple. Jesus is the SACRIFICE on the Altar

1 Cor. 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own

1. Point of the temple – Ark of the Covenant / holy of holies – for the Glory of God to fill the temple and us meet with God.
2. NOW WE CARRY the Ark of the Covenant, the Kingdom of God, wherever we go.

III.    (Let’s go back) PURPOSE OF LOCAL church BODY

A.    Heard someone say – What would church meetings look like if we were more concerned about creating an environment for the Holy Spirit that the Lord would enjoy than for people.

1.    Corporate meeting - FOR THE LORD; not for people; the church is where we minister to the Lord together and hear his word together – what He’s saying… What He’s doing…

2.    We’re never going to get so “mature” or “arrive” at the point where we no longer need to gather as local bodies. We are first called to local relationships, connections, and worship together where we live and 2nd, to whom the whole family of God is named.

Habakkuk 2:14 glory of God will cover the earth like the waters cover the sea; GLORY OF GOD
    A. break it down:
1. Earth/ people here
2. Filled / to be satisfied
3. Knowledge/ know thru experience / to perceive and see
4. Glory / worth – weightiness
5. Cover / spread over  / and to clothe
6. Sea / yäm (Key) Root Word (Etymology) from an unused root meaning to roar

B. Glory of God – cover the earth as waters cover sea. Waters are the sea. We are the glory of God – the earth is Us.


John 5:19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

A. How do we see Him? Thru WORSHIP; turning our focus completely to Him/ loving God / everywhere; all the time; and then come together corporately and see Him together – this should be an exponential experience of seeing in the Spirit

B. What is Worship? We’ve got to get this down: that He loves us. Nothing can separate us from the Love of God. Receive it  - but let’s move beyond having to be convinced so we can believe we’re accepted

1. And let’s start Loving HIM BACK; church has been for so long about convincing ourselves God loves us. Worship ---is loving God back.

2. That’s what the holy of Holies was for – a place to respond to the acceptance of God

3. If it’s always about him having to convince us of His love, we remain babies (woe to those who are still nursing babes in that day…) Much of ministry in the church has enabled the body to remain babies, never maturing

C. Worship –Love back or eventually will become only about feeding our ego.
D. Worship – looked up dozens of meanings. Two in particular:

1. To bow –to honor a position: What are we bowing to?
2. To kiss the hand like a dog licks the hand of its master. You just don’t care. This is your master and to you, He’s the only one in the room.

Isaiah 60:1 "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

    E. To rise up, you have to be kneeling down

Ephesians 5:14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

F. Come like a child but See like a Man (mature) just like we must all         love like a bride (that’s male and female)

1 Cor. 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.

G. Worship and man-made religion will always conflict because Religion is a work we do

 Hab. 2:13 Has not the LORD Almighty determined that the people's labor is only fuel for the fire, that the nations exhaust themselves for nothing? 14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

1.    Hebrew: to know by experience
2. Worship. Main thing is Love. That’s the best description of worship there is.

IV.    Worship / Prepare the Way

A.    In recent triathlon magazine, I read a quote by Joe Paterno (head coach of The Pennsylvania State University's college football team, a position he has held since 1966): “The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.”

1.    When you go out there to do the triathlon, it’s the combination of all you’ve been doing day in and day in. Do we think we’ll have anything more than what we’ve been doing day in and day out to run out on the battlefield with at His return?

Psalm 50:23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God."3 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. 5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."
6 A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?" "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."9 You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!"

B. Preparing the Way – Here’s Your God – Not here’s your church meeting where you can meet God. HE’S IN ME. MEET HIM HERE. Jesus said – when you see Me, you’ve seen the Father. That’s evangelism.

1.    Holy of Holies----not to make church more popular or to have better meetings so we can validate our ministry.

2. We serve and worship the Lord. It’s about HIM.

C. There are people rising who are saying it’s not just about church, ministry, great preaching…We’ve got to have GOD here.  Much of the church has just about everything it needs but the presence of the Lord that comes from worship without self-focus.

D. David just wanted the presence of God. That’s what made him a crazy worshipper who licked God’s hand like a dog.

E.WORSHIP WILL offend a Religious spirit – religion not is man-made is all about us.

1.    Prophesying to ego. Churches today; number for validation; all about ministry to self. What are my gifts and callings? Steps to deal with “me”

2.    WHEN WILL church be about worshipping Jesus; Yes –we need teaching but not for more information but for doorways of revelation that invite the hearer to HAVE THEIR OWN ENCOUNTER WITH THE LIVING GOD.

3. This isn’t witchcraft where we come to learn spells. (Repeat after me. Quote these words –scriptures- and God will do this…) This is relationship and we’re not God. We don’t manipulate God. We learn to trust his heart and character.

3.    The connection between Religion and Witchcraft is scary. Religion is about manipulating the power by what we can or can’t do. If we “do” this, God will “do” that.

4.    In a relationship, we can know His heart – His character – but that doesn’t mean we can predict Him. Always - in end, if we know him, we will know he’s good and there’s nothing to compare him to.

F. Worship/ children.   Kids do what parents do.

1.    Our church meetings. We are a lot more relaxed, etc. But we want to be careful that our “freedom” isn’t carelessness

2.    I kept my kids with me and I worshipped. I never made them raise their hands or made them do any certain thing. But I wouldn’t have let them play with their friends, etc. Only you as a parent can decide how to “lead” or disciple your children in worship but it should be one of the most important places we are LEADERS.

3.    I taught by demonstrating – not only way but one way -

G. Experiences with God
1.    (Easter; Passover; TIME TO begin preparing the soil for seed.

2.    Harvest – soil is turned in order to plant the seed)

3.    He’s giving us a heart of flesh because it can FEEL…that’s the only way the seed can be planted.

H. We want to get rid of distractions. Doesn’t mean get rid of ministry, or people in our lives or our job or our spouse or our children or friends.

1.    Get rid of allowing those things to become our main focus from which we get our sense of worth.

2.    Nothing will be enough but Jesus.

I.  (In a word from Bill Johnson) –paraphrase- Whatever is happening in the church that doesn’t happen out of the church will eventually die because it’s only focused on us.

1. What we know can keep us from what you need to know if don’t remain a novice.  If I think I’ve got a hold of things, I will level off.

2. We’ve only begun to see God and experience Him. Love is always beginning even when it’s growing; return to FIRST love. Like creatures who shout Holy Holy Holy every time they see a different aspect of God, etc.

3. Someone came to church and asked if they could go out to the mall and on their outreach teams, etc. Bill Johnson’s church: He said, we don’t have mall outreach – just people who shop.

4. We don’t get it perfected in the house (church meetings).  Perfectionism is a religious spirit. It’s different from excellence (quality of something)

5. It’s not a religious language – not just a “confession”; it’s the way you believe in your heart – testimony is YOUR stories.

J. The Bible elevates experience above knowledge.

Ephesians 3:6 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

1.    Being ministers of the gospel is not a profession for “preachers.” We were all told to go into all the world and make disciples. Disciples are made through one on one relationship.

2.    We are all ministers of the gospel but can’t really say every person is a minister until every occupation is a ministry. Martin Luther said, “If you’re a street sweeper, sweep streets like Michael Angelo painted.”

3.    Preaching – your testimony is your experiences with Jesus. Your stories. How do experience Jesus through raising your children, teaching your class, working on a car, building a house, running a cash register, counseling boys at a youth home, teaching guitar lessons, hanging sheetrock…

4.    EVERY PERSON has been strategically placed in society to bring about reformation – to being the Kingdom of God to earth.

K. WHEN WILL BE GET TO THE PLACE as the church when we aren’t just about having conferences and meetings to minister to ourselves?

1.    Yes – ministry is needed. Healing is needed. Restoration is needed. But that is a natural result of focus on the Lord first. (When will we move beyond a self-focused religion???) Prophetic words – not for encouragement but to build ego.

2.    Shame that much of the need for counseling in the body doesn’t happen through one on one friendships that the Holy spirit connects, etc. Immaturity either enables bitterness/jealousies/comparing/ or co-dependence for a sense of worth (feeling needed) We ARE needed but no one can satisfy that place of worth in us but the Love of God…

3.    Presently, there is hungrier for information than experience: Teaching ministry is not for the purpose of being givers of information, principles, statistics, and concepts. It’s about opening the door so you can go in and have an experience of your own with the word – with Jesus.

L. The Kingdom of God is not meat or drink but righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  These are experiences. 

1. The Heart can wrap around truth that the head just cannot get

2. When heart says yes to truth, we are then able to begin training the mind

3. Being born again—could talk, give theological answers, and never be born again. But when you experience it, something explodes inside your heart – a spiritual thing happens that you couldn’t “understand” you way into.

M. Moses: Who am I. God didn’t answer. All he had going for Him was that God liked to hang around Him.

1.    Kathryn Kaufman.  All she had going for her was God was with her.  Apparently, that’s enough

V. Jesus was the most normal Christian ever.  He didn’t do anything He did as God.  He said he couldn’t do anything of Himself.  Emptied Himself of divine capacity.

Romans 8:11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you…17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

A. He illustrated what a person who is in relationship with the Father through the Holy Spirit can do.

1. The Holy Spirit is given without measure - all measurement are set by us.

2. HIS Shadow will release whatever overshadows you.  We CARRY a dimension of presence of God on us.  Atmospheric shift wherever we go.

4.    Odds change when you walk in room----The More aware of what you carry, the more deliberate you can be as walk into places to see transformation.

5.    Air becomes pregnant with possibility b/c conscious of what carry --- someone has walked into the room

Revelations 12:11They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…


1.    Spiritual revelation is supposed to be the launching paid. 

John 5: 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

C.    Word is not just for us to quote like a SPELL. That’s witchcraft.

D.    Theology is supposed to be more than principles we can quote to win an argument. 

E. It’s possible to eat and have nutrients pass right thru and not benefit us. Can receive messages that gets applauded, enjoyed it but doesn’t alter way we see reality. It doesn’t PREPARE THE WAY…

F When we’re concept-oriented people, we just want to receive knowledge.  We think—what do people need to hear?  So we grab onto concepts rather than from the divine encounter. 


1.    It’s not possible to have a renewed mind apart from encounter --- the encounter takes what I’ve heard and makes it a part of me somehow.

John 14:11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. 15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

A. Greater works – number or quantity. Practically speaking, there are more of us. 

1. We tell kids there’s no junior Holy Spirit but neither is there a lesser Holy Spirit for one generation than another.

2. Jesus. Why greater works? We didn’t get a greater power than Jesus had or a greater relationship with the Holy Spirit.

3. The “greater works” was to keep us from limiting God to only what Jesus had done so far in the earth. It wasn’t a closer relationship with God ---or greater power---. It was to remove any box we might limit the possibilities of God’s works to. (Often unless we know about it, we think it can’t happen or isn’t scriptural)

4. Why did He tell us to tell the next generation what He’s done? So that the Word (what has happened) can become a doorway for the preceding Word (daily relationship, etc.).

5. Why limit Him to what He has said? He’s still talking. It’s the doorway --- not the room. The “room”: In my fathers house there are many “rooms” –places to meet and experience God (many rooms)

Romans 8:11And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you…17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

    B. SUFFER – to go through troubles together

1.    I want to go through troubles with YOU Lord

C. The fields are white unto harvest. Jesus is talking to the Samaritan woman at the well about WORSHIP. (Those who worship me must worship in spirit and truth…) then he says to the disciples – open your eyes; fields are white unto harvest.

1.    We can’t see the harvest until we experience the worship
2.    Worship –that prepares the way—comes out of the desert

Isaiah 35 1 The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you."5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. 8 And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness. The unclean will not journey on it; it will be for those who walk in that Way; wicked fools will not go about on it.
